Potassium Thioglycolate, 42 Percent Aqueous Solution is a depilatory agent used in personal care depilatory gels or foams.
Potassium Thioglycolate is also used in hair waving and straightening products.
Ungraded products supplied by Spectrum are indicative of a grade suitable for general industrial use or research purposes and typically are not suitable for human consumption or therapeutic use.

Potassium Thioglycolate Description
Potassium thioglycolate is an aqueous solution at the proper pH which is converted to an acid.
Potassium Thioglycolate breaks down the disulfide bonds in Keratin and weakens the hair so that it is easily scraped off where it emerges from the hair follicle.
The break down is affected by potassium hydroxide.
Potassium Thioglycolates are present in excess to enable the Potassium thioglycolate to react with the Cystine joining chains in hair protein.

Potassium thioglycolate
That skunky stench is a signature attribute of this compound, a member of the perennially pungent thiol family.
A sulfur-hydrogen atom group gives thiols their sharp scent.
They eat into keratin (a skin and hair protein), which is what makes actual skunk spray (and Nair) lock onto human flesh and fuzz.
If the process stopped there, the result would be a home perm — weakened hairs can be easily shaped into curls.

POTASSIUM THIOGLYCOLATE 43%
This safe, effective, harmless and odourless depilatory substance is widely used in all types of hair-removal products and can also be used as a reducing agent.

Potassium thioglycolate Usages
1. Potassium thioglycolate is widely used in hair removal (such as leather, human body), main agent for perm and dyeing, and preparation of solid liquid medium.
2. Potassium thioglycolate can be used in molybdenum beneficiation as a copper-sulfur inhibitor.
3. Potassium thioglycolate can also be used as a highly effective reducing agent.

What Is Potassium Thioglycolate?
Potassium thioglycolate is an organic compound that contains a thiol group (-SH) and carboxylic acid.
Potassium Thioglycolate is a colorless liquid. Potassium thioglycolate and some salts and esters of Potassium thioglycolate, such as Ammonium Thioglycolate, Butyl Thioglycolate, Calcium Thioglycolate, Ethanolamine Thioglycolate, Glyceryl Thioglycolate, Isooctyl Thioglycolate, Isopropyl Thioglycolate, Magnesium Thioglycolate, Methyl Thioglycolate, Potassium Thioglycolate and Sodium Thioglycolate are used in hair coloring products, permanent wave products, hair straightening products and depilatory products.
Potassium Thioglycolate is manufactured by the Bruno Bock Group for the following applications.

Why is Potassium Thioglycolate used in cosmetics and personal care products?
Potassium thioglycolate and Potassium Thioglycolate salts and esters modify hair fibers to facilitate changes to the structure of the fibers, such as with permanent waves or with hair straightening.
They are also used to chemically break down hair fibers so that unwanted hair can be removed by simply wiping Potassium Thioglycolate from the skin.

Scientific Facts about Potassium Thioglycolate:
Potassium thioglycolate and Potassium Thioglycolates salts and esters break disufide bonds in the cortex of the hair.
After washing, the hair is treated with a mild solution of hydrogen peroxide, which causes new bonds to form, giving hair the rigid structure necessary for permanent waves.

KOPCOLATE (Potassium thioglycolate): An Active Depilatory
The term depilatory means ‘removing the hair’.
However, many chemical products that come in cream, lotion, powder, gel, roll-on or spray forms that get rid of hair are often called depilatories.
In fact, most people think of these specific type of products when they hear or see the word depilatory.
They’re great from removing unwanted hair from different parts of body.

Hair removal products work by breaking down the protein structure of the hair shaft.
Potassium Thioglycolate depilatories come in gels, lotions and creams and can be effective.
There are many chemicals used for as active ingredient for hair removal.

Thioglycolate salts and sulfides are among the common active ingredients in hair removal products.
The chemical name of Kopcolate is Potassium thioglycolate.
Potassium Thioglycolate is an organic compound used primary active ingredient in Hair depilatories formulations.
In an aqueous solution at the proper pH Potassium Thioglycolate is converted to an acid which then affect the hair.

Potassium Thioglycolate breaks down the disulfide bonds in Keratin and weakens the hair so that Potassium Thioglycolate is easily scraped of where Potassium Thioglycolate emerges from the hair follicle.
The breakdown is affected by calcium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide.
They are present in excess to enable the thioglycolic acid to react with the cystine joining chains in hair protein.
The advantages of using Kopcolate (Potassium thioglycolate) are Potassium Thioglycolate is pain free unlike waxing, Quick and easy to use at home and relatively inexpensive.
Potassium Thioglycolate also makes skin stubble and soft.
