Phosphino-polycarboxylic acid (PPCA), a phosphorus-labeled linear polymer, has been widely used for controlling scale formation in the oil/gas field and water treatment processes because of its strong scale-inhibiting capability, high thermal stability, and environmental acceptability.
PPCA is similar to poly(acrylic acid) with about 1% (w/w) phosphorus added to facilitate analytical measurement

Polyphosphino Carboxylic Acid (PPCA) polymeric scale inhibitor is widely used for downhole application in oilfield squeeze treatments.
Like all scale inhibitors (SI), it must perform the dual role of inhibiting scale formation at low concentration levels (~2 to 20ppm) while giving acceptably long return curves at the wellbore.
Both of these properties of polymeric scale inhibitors, inhibition efficiency and retention, are thought to be the functions of the molecular weight. PPCA is often applied in the field as a “precipitation squeeze” treatment and the molecular weight also has an important effect on the solubility of the polymer complex which is precipitated.

Phosphino-carboxylic acid water reducing agent and preparation method thereof
Abstract
The invention relates to a water reducing agent for concrete and a preparation method, and particularly relates to a phosphino-carboxylic acid water reducing agent and a preparation method thereof. The phosphino-carboxylic acid water reducing agent is formed by polymerizing a large monomer, a phosphorus-containing compound, a small monomer and an initiator through a free radial polymerization reaction; the raw materials are as follows in percentage by mole: 15-30% of large monomer, 1-8% of phosphorus-containing compound, 65-80% of small monomer, 1-5% of initiator and the balance of water; and the preparation method comprises the following steps: enabling the raw materials to react for 3-6 hours at 40-85 DEG C; cooling to 35-40 DEG C; and adding an alkaline compound to adjust the pH value to neutrality, wherein the product is the phosphino-carboxylic acid water reducing agent.
The phosphino-carboxylic acid water reducing agent provided by the invention shows good water reducing property and collapse resistance in the concrete with different content of mud and powder/mud sand samples; and the working performance of the concrete with different content of powder/mud can be realized in normal compounding process, and the quality of the concrete can be guaranteed.

Application of  PCA

It is suggested to be used in cooling water or boiler systems, oilfield, reverse osmosis (RO), ceramic industry, etc.

Ceramics:
Calcium carbonate is one of the most important materials that use in the ceramic industry.
So the use of PCA in ceramic industries can disperse CaCO3. therefore it can control the CaCO3 scale and improve properties.

Boiler system:
Boiler systems produce hot water or vapors in Power plants, factories and etc.

Some impurities like CaCO3 and CaSO4 in the boiler system can cause deposition and eventually boilers to fail.
Therefore use this product as dispersion, preventing sedimentation and improve the life of boilers.

In boiler systems, this product can be stable until 900 psig pressure.

Cool water system:
In a cool water system, Phosphino Carboxylic Acid retains the heat transfer property and acts as a corrosion inhibitor.
By adding ZnSO4 or copolymer with this product, the inhibitory effect of PCA can improve.  In a cool water system, the probability of calcium carbonate formation increases in high pH. So in alkaline conditions by adding this product, The problem of calcium carbonate formation can be solved.

Industrial wastewater has some impurities that can damage the environment.
With recycle, these impurities can help nature or reduce cost. both of HEDP and Phosphino Carboxylic Acid use in the water treatment process. But a little use of this product is equivalent to HEDP and is superior to polyacrylates.

Pulp and paper industry:
Phosphino Carboxylic Acid in pulp and paper industry acts like as phosphonates and acrylates. This product is stable in alkaline conditions and can control the scale of CaCo3 and CaSO4.

Oilfield:
Due to its specific visibility, impartiality and affordability of barium sulfate, it is widely used in the oil and gas drilling industry. This is one of the vital minerals in the oil drilling industry. By adding this product, it can affect as a scale inhibitor for BaSO4 and SrSO4.

Polyphosphino Carboxylic Acid (PPCA) polymeric scale inhibitor is widely used for downhole application in oilfield squeeze treatments. Like all scale inhibitors (SI), it must perform the dual role of inhibiting scale formation at low concentration levels (∼2 to 20ppm) while giving acceptably long return curves at the wellbore. In this work, we present several results on the phase behaviour and properties of PPCA when it is applied in precipitation squeeze
