PTSA Application       ::

PTSA is comparable in strength to mineral acids such as Sulphuric acid, but are especially suitable for organic reactions where an inorganic, mineral acid could cause charring, oxidation, or an unwanted chemical reaction.
It is most useful as acid-catalyst reaction such as esterification /condensation /acetylation / polymerization/ alkylation’s/ hydrolysis /dehydration.

PTSA is used as a hardening agent of furan resin which is applied in foundry Industry (Sand Casting)
PTSA finds application in Plasticizers industries mainly for DEP/ DOP/ DBP – As esterification catalyst
PTSA is also used as curing agent for many resin system such as mino/phenolic/acrylic resins/resoles / epoxies / amino-Plastics and furniture lacquers
PTSA is an anti-stress additive for electroplating baths additive, plastics, coatings, dyes, pharmaceutical intermediates, hydrotrope, coupling agent and as a wetting agent
PTSA is also applicable for use in food packaging adhesives

USES OF PTSA
As intermediate of dye chemistry
In Butyl Acrylate manufacturing – As catalyst
In Pharmaceutical industries is used for manufacturing of below product – As catalyst.
CIPROFLOXACIN , Persantin, Naproxen DOXYCYCLIN SULPHAMETHAXAZOLE
And produce the intermediates of Amoxicillin , Cefadroxil

As with other sulfonic acids, p-Toluenesulfonic acid is a strong organic acid.
p-Toluenesulfonic acid is about one million times stronger than benzoic acid.
p-Toluenesulfonic acid is one of the few strong acids that is solid and, hence, conveniently weighed.

Preparation and handling
p-Toluenesulfonic acid is prepared on an industrial scale by the sulfonation of toluene.
P-Toluenesulfonic acid is hygroscopic and hydrates readily. Common impurities include benzenesulfonic acid and sulfuric acid. p-Toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate contains crystalline water as well as water as an impurity. To estimate the total moisture present as impurity, the Karl Fischer method is used.[citation needed] Impurities can be removed by recrystallization from its concentrated aqueous solution followed by azeotropic drying with toluene.[2]

p-Toluenesulfonic acid finds use in organic synthesis as an “organic-soluble” acid catalyst. Examples of uses include:

Acetalization of an aldehyde.
Esterification of carboxylic acids.
Transesterification of an ester
Tosylates
Alkyl tosylates are alkylating agents because tosylate is electron-withdrawing, which makes the tosylate anion a good leaving group.
Tosylate is a pseudohalide. Toluenesulfonate esters undergo nucleophilic attack or elimination. Reduction of tosylate esters gives the hydrocarbon.
Thus, tosylation followed by reduction allows for the deoxygenation of alcohols.

In a famous and illustrative use of tosylate, 2-norbornyl cation was displaced from the 7-norbornenyl tosylate.
The elimination occurs 1011 faster than the solvolysis of anti-7-norbornyl p-toluenesulfonate.

Structures of the 7-norbornenyl cation with p-orbital stabilization.
Tosylates are also protecting group for alcohols. They are prepared by combining the alcohol with 4-toluenesulfonyl chloride, usually in an aprotic solvent, often pyridine.[10]

Reactions
p-Toluenesulfonic acid may be converted to p-toluenesulfonic anhydride by heating with phosphorus pentoxide.
When heated with acid and water, p-Toluenesulfonic acid undergoes hydrolysis to toluene:
CH3C6H4SO3H + H2O → C6H5CH3 + H2SO4
This reaction is general for aryl sulfonic acids.

PTSA, Para Toluene Sulfonic Acid

P-toluenesulfonic acid is a commonly used acid catalyst in organic synthesis.
Para Toluene Sulfonic Acid is neutralized with sodium hydroxide to prepare sodium p-toluenesulfonate, and then reacted with phosphorus pentachloride to prepare p-toluenesulfonyl chloride.
The latter is used in nucleophilic substitution reactions and also as a protecting group for alcoholic hydroxyl groups.

p-CH3C6H4SO3Na + PCl5 → p-CH3C6H4SO2Cl

P-toluenesulfonic acid can be mixed with dehydrating agent phosphorus pentoxide to generate p-toluenesulfonic anhydride.
P-toluenesulfonic acid is also used to catalyze the esterification and transesterification of dihydropyran protecting groups on alcohols, carboxylic acids; make aldehydes form acetals; as catalysts for hydrolyzing proteins and glycoproteins; and can be used to synthesize dihydropyrimidines
The Biginelli reaction and the metal nitrate are selectively nitrated in the ortho position of the phenolic hydroxyl group in phenol and substituted phenol.
