P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative is a 98% chlorocresol which is used for the preservation of polymer dispersions and emulsions, metalworking and cutting fluids and industrial lubricants.

p-Chlorocresol (p-chloro-m-cresol; PCMC; brand name: P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL) possesses disinfectant and antiseptic properties.
Chlorocresol is used in various preparations for skin disinfection and wounds.
It also used as a preservative in creams and other preparations for external use which contain water.
For use as a disinfectant such as a hand wash, it is commonly dissolved in alcohol in combination with other phenols.
It is a moderate allergen for sensitive skin.
Chlorocresol produces potentially life-threatening effects which include dermatitis, which are responsible for the discontinuation of chlorocresol therapy.
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by chlorocresol are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include hypersensitivity reactions, irritation of eyes.

STORAGE
Product should be stored in the original sealed package. At storage temperature above appropriately 35°C or higher, the product tends to become lumpy.
When exposed to air, light, moisture or heat, the product may turn slightly red.
Change in the color and consistency of product does not affect the efficacy of the product.
The shelf life of P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative is at least 24 months.

APPLICATION
It is recommended that the P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative be pre-dissolved (e.g. in alcohol, glycol or caustic soda solution) to ensure the product is evenly distributed in the finished formulation.
P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative can also be added in the form of an alkaline stock solution.
A stock solution containing 30% P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative can be formulated by stirring 1 kg P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative into 1.85 liters of water and 0.5 kg 50 % caustic soda solution until it dissolves.
Dissolving can be accelerated by gently heating the liquid.
The steam-volatility of P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative must be taken in account in the case of certain applications (e.g. when drying glue slurries which contain P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative)

MATERIAL PRESERVATION
In the production of dry flues, P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative should be added toward the end of the thickening stage in order to minimize any losses of the active ingredient.
For polymer dispersion, the P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative should be added immediately following the polymer dispersion or emulsion stage of the manufacturing process during the cooling process.
For leather applications, P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative may be dissolved in five times the amount of alcohol and then stirred into pickle solution.
Chrome leather can be preserved by stirring P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative and caustic soda into basifying solution for optimum incorporation.
P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative is oil soluble and can be easily dissolved into the fat liquor and added directly to the drum.
For textile applications, P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative should be incorporated into the dry thickener. Grinding is required.
P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative could also be added to the ready to use thickener solution.
The EPA approved dosage levels are provided in the chapter “Direction for Use”, but variables such as pH, temperature, initial microbial count or intended storage time of the finished product to be preserved should be taken into consideration.
To obtain reliable and reproducible results, homogeneous distribution in the materials to be protected must be ensured by taking suitable measures in production (stirring, agitating, etc.)

MATERIAL COMPATIBILITY
P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative is compatible with high quality stainless steel. In the case of plastics, Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP), Teflon (PTFE) and FRC Atlac 382 are compatible with Preventol Preservative.
Viton and EPDM 75 have shown good compatibility with the P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL Preservative.
As with any product, use of the products mentioned in this publication in a given application must be tested (including field testing, etc.) by the user in advance to determine suitability.

p-chloro-m-cresol (P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL) is an active substance with a specified minimal purity of 99.8%.
The analysis of representative production batches of the active substance were provided.
The relevant impurity m-cresol specification is 0.1%.
Considering the classification of m-cresol and its content in the active substance (0.1%), mcresol is not considered as a substance of concern for (eco)toxicological point of view.

The preparation Dettol new wave is a clear yellow, typically washing-medium odour waterbased liquid formulation (emulsion concentrate), containing 4 % of P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL.
This formulation does not present explosive nor oxidising properties.
It has a self-ignition temperature higher than Chlorocresol Product 100, with a flash point of 36.5°C.

The product is therefore Flam. Liq. 3, H226 according to CLP regulation.
Its density is 0.992 g/l.
The pH of the undiluted formulation is 9.4 while the pH of a 5% dilution is 8.7 at 25°C.
There is no effect of low and high temperature on the stability of the formulation, since after 7 days at 0°C and/or 14 days at 54°C, neither the active ingredient content nor the technical properties were changed.
The surface tension of pure biocidal product is 30 mN/m.
The product is surface active.
After 1 minute, no persistent foam remained, indicating that the preparation is not a foaming product.
Emulsifiability, emulsion stability re-emulsification and Pourability were not measured and must be submitted at product authorization stage.

The content of active substance is unchanged by 3 years storage at ambient temperature but the lack of studies for assessment of technical properties before and after storage prevents RMS to set a shelf life for biocidal product

The intended use of p-chloro-m-cresol (P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL) as PT 1 is:
Main Group 01: Disinfectants, general biocidal products
Product Type 01: Human hygiene.
Further specification: Skin, scalp.

The representative product DETTOL New Wave is a product for hygienic hand disinfection efficacious against bacteria (e.g Escherichia coli).
It is intended for use in hospitals, medical

p-chloro-m-cresol has a multi-site mode of action, with basic activity at the cell wall, disruption of membrane potentials and general membrane permeability of cytoplasmic membrane.
At high concentrations, P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL also has an effect on cytoplasm by general coagulation.practices by professional users (adults only) and for personal hygiene purposes by nonprofessionals.

The basic activity of the substance P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL has been demonstrated for the bactericidal and fungicidal activity, according to phase 1 of efficacy tests, which cannot be used to determine an application rate, relevant for the risk assessment.

The literature analysis clearly showed that especially if the concentration of P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL is in the efficient range (for PT 1: ca. 0.2 % w/w; in-use concentration) no acquired resistance occurs.
In addition, using bactericidal concentrations, the risk of development of cross-resistance or co-resistance is in general low, considering the multi-site activity of P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL.
Since it interacts with many different targets of the bacterial cell wall, the risk of developing resistance mechanisms is minimal.
Few authors described insufficient sporocidal effects of P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL and explained this by development of resistance.
However, P-CHLORO-M-CRESOL is not efficacious against microbial spores and such well-known lack of sporicidal efficacy cannot be interpreted as result of resistance development.
